About Broadbottom Station and Viaduct

The line over the Pennines from Manchester to Sheffield which eventually became the Great Central main line was built between 1841 and 1845 by the Sheffield, Ashton-under-Lyne & Manchester Railway. The route involved considerable engineering works, not least being the Woodhead Tunnel, and eminent engineers were involved, Charles Vignoles until 1839 and then Joseph Locke.

At Broadbottom a viaduct was built over the Etherow river, and another rather larger a little further east over Dinting Vale. As constructed these were tall and graceful structures, built with timber arches and supports, laid on stone piers. Sadly the timbers deteriorated and after little more than 10 years had to be replaced with wrought iron plate girders. By the 20th century the weight of trains was such that additional piers had to be inserted, so the appearance of both viaducts was seriously affected.

However at Broadbottom the 1847 station remains little altered in spite of being incorporated into a pub.

By Road: Broadbottom lies on a minor road off the A626 between Stockport and Glossop which passes close to both viaducts.
