About Grange-over-Sands Station and Hotel

Barrow-in-Furness was built by local landowners to promote their mining interests and its first connection with the rest of the country was by rail up the Cumberland coast. The Furness Railway then became the principal developer of Barrow as a port and ship-building location. The forging of a connection eastward was carried out by a separate but associated company and completed in 1857. Grange was developed as a resort in order to boost traffic on the line.

The result is a pleasant place facing the Kent Estuary and the station was built as an attractive point of entry. The Grange Hotel was built at the same time as the station between 1864-72, both buildings designed by E.G. Paley. They share an Italianate flavour, and both were built from local limestone with hipped roofs and glass and iron awnings.

The station was restored in 1997 and stands in a conservation area. Both are Grade II Listed Buildings.

By road: Off A590.
