About Mortimer Station

When the railway between Reading and Basingstoke was being planned, the Duke of Wellington required that there should be no station nearer than five miles from his estate at Stratford Saye. He was however persuaded by his neighbours to accept a distance of only three miles. They were at pains to assure him that it would be suitably commodious. The GWR took little notice and built a standard station of the time.

It survives in good shape as a perfect example of Brunel's standard country station, similar to Charlbury in the Italianate style. It is a Grade II listed building.

By road: On Station road in Stratford Mortimer, off the A33.
