West End Garage, Turnastone, Vowchurch, Herefordshire, HR2 0RA
The garage is part of a nineteenth century cottage. Two petrol pumps are located in the front garden, one a Wayne, the other an Avery Hardoll. They are separated from the road by a low brick wall and from each other by an arched yew hedge. The house has an enamel advertisement for Raleigh bicycles and another for Castrol on the facade. A front room serves as shop and sales desk.
It has been in business since 1919 and has the second licence ever issued to sell petrol, granted in 1922. The business remains in the ownership of the founder's family, Wilding.
Compare this entry with that for Ramsbury Garage, claimed to have the oldest operating petrol pumps.
On a minor road off the B 4348 west of Vowchurch.
