About Wetheral Viaduct

The Newcastle & Carlisle Railway was one of the first in the country, being opened in part in 1834 and throughout in 1839. At Wetheral it crosses the river Eden on a 172 m. (188 yds) long stone viaduct at a height of 29 m. (95 ft.) above the river. Designed by Francis Giles, the company engineer, and built by W.S. Denton, it has five arches of 24 m. (80 ft.) span and is listed Grade I.

In the centre of Wetheral adjacent to the station on the B6263.
