Waverley on the Clyde

PS Waverley prepares to sail again

Vintage transport fans will have noticed the withdrwawal of PS Waverley from active service in 2019 and the appeal for funds to manufacture and fit two new boilers. The plan was to have her ready to sail again for the 2020 summer season - until Coronavirus intervened.

The good news is that the appeal was successful, Waverley’s two new boilers were ordered late last year and fitted in the first few days of April, completing a major refit milestone. Each boiler, weighing 21 tonnes apiece, was gently lowered into position on Waverley and securely bolted to its hull mountings. However, what should have been moments for celebration were muted by social distancing, against the sombre background of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Waverley’s boiler refit continues at Dales Marine Services shipyard in Greenock following reduced activity during the lockdown. Work is now focused on completing the electrical and boiler installation, and hopes are high that steam will be raised next month (July) in her new boilers.

The question of carrying passengers this year remains open. Waverley Excursions (the operating company) continues to review Government guidance and will make a further announcement on whether Waverley can operate in 2020 as soon as possible. Given the overwhelming support for the ship we will strive to return her to service when it is right to do so.

With new boilers and electrical systems Waverley will be technically the most advanced she has ever been. I look forward to seeing all those who supported the boiler refit appeal stepping aboard to enjoy the unique piece of maritime heritage which they have saved. I hope we will also be able to attract many locals who have yet to experience a cruise on Waverley, particularly when it brings economic benefit to the many communities Waverley visits.
