The most obvious and recognisable part of the Engineering support at RAF Brize Norton is 'Base Hangar', which towers over the north-eastern quadrant of the Station. All servicing, including minor, minor star and major servicing, of the RAF fleet of VC10s was undertaken within this purpose built hangar, constructed in 1969. It was then the largest cantilever-roofed structure in Europe.
Base Hangar is 0.4 km (0.25 miles) in length with no internal supports; when the full length hangar doors are fully opened it offers a vast unobstructed area. Six VC10 aircraft could be positioned . It can accommodate six aircraft beside each other, within its 5.5 acres of floor space, and still provide working space around the aircraft. The building can host either two TriStars or one TriStar and one C-17.
