Visit websiteMachynlleth station is a railway station on the Cambrian Line in mid-Wales, serving the historic town of Machynlleth. Built by the Newtown & Machynlleth Railway, it subsequently passed into the ownership of the Cambrian Railways, the Great Western Railway, British Railways (Western Region) and British Railways (London Midland Region).
The station was also served by the narrow gauge Corris Railway, which had its own station building on the north side of the main-line goods yard, accessible by a flight of steps from the standard gauge platform. Waggish porters were known to call out "Platform 14 for Corris" when greeting arriving passengers. Sterling efforts are being made to restore part of this attractive narrow gauge railway.
The station, the largest on the line, was designed by T.M. Penson, a Chester based architect who designed many of the stations in Shropshire and North Wales. A characteristic of those he designed on the Newtown & Machynlleth Railway was a picturesque cottage ornee style, built in snecked rubble with ashlar dressings, rustication, gable finials and detailed bargeboards.
By road: Off A487, on the northern edge of the town.
