Visit websiteThe comparatively late date for this large station, 1877, is due to the growth of the town. The population was about 40 when the railway first appeared in 1831, and grew phenomenally to over 100,000 in 1900. The station was an expression of pride in this growth. it was designed by William Peachey for the North Eastern Railway.
The pierced parapets,high pitched roof, large dormer windows, and massive arched windows below are given greater prominence by being at first floor level reached by stairs or a vehicle ramp. Inside, the booking hall has a hammer-beam roof.
