Visit websiteThe Wimbledon & Croydon Railway which opened in 1855 incorporated part of the track-bed of the Surrey Iron Railway. This electrified branch line was one of the last areas of operation of the London, Brighton & South Coast overhead electric trains, when they were converted to third rail in two car sets. In 1997 the line was closed for conversion into a tram route as part of the Croydon Tramway.
The station building which survives has an uncertain history. It is not clear whether it was purpose built for the Surrey Iron Railway or, as seems more likely, had been built as a private dwelling shortly before in about 1800. In any event it was one of the oldest station buildings in the country when it was adopted as Mitcham Station in 1855 by the Wimbledon & Croydon Railway, which later became part of the London, Brighton.
The building which is in brick with sash windows has a Georgian appearance. It has a central archway which could suggest that it was either built for a small merchant or to provide access to the Tramway.
By Road or Rail: On the east side of A217 next to the Crown Inn, near a stop (Mitcham) on the Croydon Tram.
