- The first Nottingham station was a terminus station on the west side of Carrington Street, serving trains from Derby. The site of it later became the Goods Depot and the building that formed the Carrington Street face of the Depot was converted into the Coroner's Office when the rest of the Goods Depot was closed and demolished. The Coroner's Office looks a lot like the original station - a fine Georgian building - but (frustratingly) it's not the original - different number of windows etc.
- When the Midland Railway was extended through (in a West to East direction) to Lincoln, the passenger station entrance was moved to Station Street - which runs between Carrington Street and London Road. Much of the unimpressive Station Street building still stands.
- When the Great Northern Railway reached Nottingham from Grantham, there were battles with the MR (including a loco being impounded) and the GNR subsequently decided to build its own station, on London Road. It is that magnificent terminus that subsequently became London Road (Low Level) Station - to which The Transpirt Trust have awarded a Red Wheel Heritage Plaque..
- On the building of the (North to South) Great Central Railway in the 1890s, most GNR trains were diverted to use the magnificent new GCR / GNR Victoria Station - via a link line which incorporated Nottingham London Road (High Level) Station. Both Victoria and High Level Stations were demolished in the 1960s / 70s. The Victoria Station clock still stands: nothing remains of High Level or Arkwright Street Stations.
- The Midland Railway responded to the arrival of the Great Central by the construction of very elegant stations (or at least frontages) at Nottingham, Leicester and Sheffield ... around 1911. The Nottingham version faces onto the east side of Carrington Street.
- With the 21st century railway revival and the arrival of the Nottingham Tramway, Nottingham Midland Station has belatedly had money spent on it (including the erection of a new girder bridge to carry the tram, in almost exactly the same position as the girder bridge that used to carry the GCR / LNER over the MR / LMS). The restored station buildings were officially re-opened by Transport Trust President, Sir William McAlpine.
