The railway northward from Inverness was opened progressively between 1856 and 1874. The part of the line between Bonar Bridge (now Ardgay) and Golspie was opened in 1868 by the Sutherland Railway. At the head of the Kyle of Sutherland it crossed the river Oykel on a lattice girder bridge. The bridge is 70 m (230 ft) long with stone abutments with two round approach arches on the south side and three on the north.
Invershin station on the north shore is only half a mile from Culrain station on the south side. Until the arrival of the railway these two places were five miles apart. There is now a footbridge on the side of the bridge so there is now an alternative direct connection between the two places. Until 1917 the rail fare between the two was a half penny.
The viaduct is listed Grade A.
By road: A 836 passes beneath an approach arch to the viaduct on the north shore of the Kyle of Sutherland and crosses the line at Invershin station.
