This long viaduct was built in 1886 to carry the single track coastal line of the Great North of Scotland Railway over the mouth of the river Spey . It is notable not only for its great length but also for its impressive diamond-lattice trusses on stone piers and its 350 ft. long hog-back truss supporting open box girders. It crosses the mouth of the river Spey at a height of only 3m above the water level.
The River Spey is unusual in that it increases speed as it flows closer to the coast, due to the surrounding geography. The mean flow is around 16 m/s making it the fastest flowing river in Scotland, possibly the UK. The Spey railway bridge was originally designed with the main span over the main flow of the river; however, before construction was completed the river had changed its course and was running at one end of the bridge.
It is now a footpath, on the Speyside Way.
By Road: East of Garmouth on the Speyside Way.
