What we do
Two Hundred Years of Enterprise
The story of the Garrett works represents two hundred years of vision, invention, and perseverance. The life of this unique business is closely intertwined with the agricultural and industrial revolutions, imperial growth and decline, the development of steam power, and road and rail transport, and with the impact and outcome of global conflict. The Long Shop itself is a monument to imagination, collaboration and innovation that spans the Atlantic. Richard Garrett Engineering saw major societal and cultural change throughout its existence, too. Particularly, the role of women in the spheres of education, manufacturing, medicine and politics. These stories, and many more, are revealed and explored at this iconic industrial heritage site in the heart of rural East Suffolk.
