In 1930 inventor George Bennie opened a demonstration track that he had funded above a freight line near Milngavie in which a propellor-driven passenger car shaped like a cigar-case hung from an overhead gantry. At the 1930 launch when it was hailed as futuristic with high levels of enthusiasm. Intended as the precursor to a high-speed network freeing up the railway lines below it for slower traffic, Bennie was never able to get the financial backing to develop the idea further. The proposed Edinburgh to Glasgow line was never built, nor the one between Blackpool and Southport. After a few months it was left to rust, being dismantled in 1956. Bennie himself went bankrupt, but in 1953 called for the Isle of Wight to receive such a system.
