This little toll house is thought to have been built for the Henley and Dorchester Turnpike Trust in 1827. It is in the form of a lodge cottage with protruding front.
Its external features consist of a single-storey on a floor plan of canted bay front with two wings, having a hipped, hip over bay roof, with walls mainly of render. It is roofed in slate, with square headed sliding sash windows. There is no porch but a square headed doorway, and a central chimney stack on the ridge. Originally plain brick, it was built to replace the lower gate when Bix Hill was improved by MacAdam.
After the turnpike closed it was used as the local post office. It is Listed Grade II.
