A handsome Category B-listed Victorian station, once the terminus of three branch lines, that retains its clock and ornate façade and has regained a platform canopy. Soon to be installed will be an elegant footbridge that had to be removed from Strathbungo in Glasgow so as to allow clearance for electrification.
Opened in 1848 by the Aberdeen Railway, whose main line was joined at the junction station of Bridge of Dun four miles away, with most branch trains continuing to Montrose. Rebuilt half-a-century later by the Caledonian Railway, but closed by British Railways to passengers in 1952 and to remaining freight traffic (agricultural lime) in 1981. Reopened as a heritage line by the Caledonian Railway (Brechin) in 1993 to Bridge of Dun, and extension now proposed towards Montrose.
