The York & North Midland Railway was a railway company which opened in 1839, connecting York, with the Leeds & Selby Railway and in 1840 with the North Midland Railway at Normanton near Leeds. It was the means of access for York to the Midlands and London and grew under the leadership of George Hudson. In 1849 after Hudson's financial collapse, the company came under the guidance of T E Harrison who proposed a merger with the York Newcastle & Berwick Railway and the Leeds Northern Railway. This took place in 1854 to form the North Eastern Railway.
Located between Scarborough and Bridlington, Filey received the York & North Midland Railway comparatively early in 1846. The station dates from that time and is a particularly well preserved example of G.T. Andrews' stations with overall roof and a single storey station building.
A peculiarity is that the footbridge being of standard size was longer than the width of the overall roof, and so it has been accommodated by a hole made in the side wall. The station is aListed Grade II* building, in recognition of its integrity. (See also Filey Holiday Camp Station)
