Visit websiteHenry Howard, 13th Duke of Norfolk who built the spur line from Dinting viaduct to Howard Town at his own expense over his own land. He then sold it to the Sheffield, Ashton-Under-Lyne and Manchester Railway. The station was opened in July 1845. There was a previous station called Glossop on the main line but that was renamed "Dinting" when the current station opened.
The station is a modest twin gabled affair. Over the main doorway there is a pediment surmounted by a stone lion, emblem of the Howards, the Dukes of Norfolk.
It is fortunate that the station is enhanced by the attentions of the 'Friends of Glossop Station'.
