The origins of Hoeford garage goes back to 1903 when the Portsmouth Street Tramways Company successfully applied for the electrification of the Gosport tramway system and the section of track to Fareham. Hoeford depot was built between 1903 and 1904. The first electric trams commenced operation from the depot on 20 December 1905.
The depot was extended in June 1940, with the demolition of the power station chimney and the conversion of the boiler house into a maintenance area. At the same time, a new garage was built to the western side of the original building.
On 18 June 1957, fire damaged the original tram sheds which made up the eastern wing, with all but two vehicles being lost. A new garage was built and was completed in March 1959. A new garage built on the east wing to house eight maintenance pits and offices was completed in October 1969.
The depot remains an important centre for the maintenance of the First Hampshire & Dorset fleet. Parts of the original 1904 structure still stands and are used in the day to day operation of buses over one hundred years after completion.
