After the loss of Euston Station in London, this is undoubtedly the most impressive classical style station in Britain. It owes its grandeur partly to the reconciliation of a dispute between the two railway companies who wished to use it - the Huddersfield & Manchester Railway & Canal Co. and the Manchester & Leeds Railway - and partly to the ambitious plans of the Ramsden family trustees who owned most of the town and were in the process of laying out its fine streets. The station dominates a square in the centre of Huddersfield
The architect was J.P. Pritchett. It was constructed with a classical style facade with a portico of the Corinthian order, consisting of six columns in width and two in depth, which dominate St George's Square where it is located. The station is 123 m (416 ft) long. It became the joint property of the Lancashire & Yorkshire and London & North Western Railways.
The poet John Betjeman described the imposing station frontage as 'the most splendid in England'.
