About Lockwood and Paddock Viaducts

The Lancashire & Yorkshire line to Sheffield from Huddersfield crossed Paddock Viaduct shortly after leaving Huddersfield. This is a 15 arch viaduct with four wrought iron lattice spans designed by Sir John Hawkshaw. It is followed by the more impressive Lockwood Viaduct, also by Sir John Hawkshaw and opened in 1850. It has 32 arches at a height of 37 m. (122 ft.) and a skewed wider span at either end.

Until 1949 the Meltham branch swung to the south at the northern end of the Lockwood. The viaduct carrying the branch joined the Lockwood thus making what is an unusual forked structure.

By Road: Lockwood viaduct is visible from B6108 which passes beneath it, or from A616. Paddock Viaduct crosses a built up area and is visble from the A62 and the Huddersfield Canal as well as many minor roads.
