Visit websiteThe first multi-storey garage to be opened specifically for shoppers was Macy's in Balderton Street, London, adjacent to Selfridges store.
Classical in style, its grand collonaded entrance provided cover for an array of petrol pumps. It was featured in the 1927 RIBA 'Exhibition of Modern Architecture'. It was set out on four floors with a ramp to the first floor and a lift to the higher levels. The exterior columns had a somewhat Egyptian appearance set in a white stone facade.
It offered free parking for shoppers in Selfridges together with repair and service facilities, dining and rest rooms, and a room for chauffeurs. It also contained a car wash and turntable.
By Road: Balderton Street runs south from Oxford Street opposite Selfridges.
