Situated at the top of Middleton Incline on the High Peak Trail is the restored Middleton Top Engine House, which was built in 1829. Wagons were hauled up the 1 in 8 and a quarter gradient and were raised and lowered some 78 m. (256 ft.). The building has a hexagonal shape facing down the incline and iron- framed Gothic windows.
The Engine House is the sole survivor of nine that once stood at the top of every incline along the Cromford and High Peak Railway. It is designated as an Ancient Monument, together with its Butterley beam engine . Originally there were two of these 20 h.p. low pressure condensing beam engines.
Restoration was carried out by the Derbyshire Archaeological Society for the County Council.
By Road: from Wirksworth drive up towards Middleton by Wirksworth. As you arrive at the village, Middleton Top is signposted left, along the road which leads to Carsington and Ashbourne.
By Bus: the R61 bus from Matlock to Derby goes close to Middleton Top.
