Stourport-on-Severn, with a population of over 19,000, is uniquely the only town in Britain built solely as a consequence of the coming of the canals. Before the growth of the town there existed a small hamlet called Lower Mitton. Two black and white houses from circa 1600 can still be found in Mitton Street.
Stourport is an inland port, much of the port area little changed from the eighteenth century. There are four interlinked basins, locks and warehouses with a clock tower, built by the Canal Company in 1788.
The 'Staffs and Worcs.' was an early 'contour' canal, opened in 1772, part of Brindley's intention to create a 'Grand Cross' of canals connecting the rivers Severn and Trent, and the Mersey and Thames. The canal was still making a profit when it was nationalized in 1948.
By Road: On York Street in Stourport which is part of the A451.
By Boat: On the canals.
